We’ve put together some helpful information for participants.  We welcome any questions you may have and will do our absolute best to respond to them in the days leading up to the event.

Rain or Shine: The event happens on Saturday regardless of the weather.  Right now, the forecast is calling for sun and temps in the lower 70′s with a very low chance of rain.

Registration: Registration begins at 11am.  We’ve increased the amount of time for participants to try to reach all twenty destinations at an enjoyable pace. We will register participants up until 2pm.

Pedal for Prizes is completely free and open to cyclists of all ages and skill levels.

At Loew Park, you’ll sign a release form and receive a map of twenty-two destinations and a punch card.  Cyclists are free to go on their way to as many destinations as they’d like in any order.

We will have volunteer extraordinaire Paul Lopez on hand to assist you with light repairs to your bike.

We reserve the right to request you bring your bicycle to the registration table.

If you’re driving your bike to the event, Loew Park has a limited number of parking spaces.  However, there plenty of on-street places to park.  We just ask everyone to please be respectful to our Old Brooklyn neighbors.

Cheating: Pedal for Prizes is meant to be a fun event done by bicycle. We have no tolerance for people who use other means of transportation (i.e. motor vehicle) to travel to destinations.  Participants found to be using forms of transportation other than a bicycle will have their punch cards revoked and will be barred from participating in the raffle.

If you observe instances of cheating, please report it to us immediately.  Merchants and people staffing our destinations will be keeping an eye out for foul play as well.

What to bring: Your bike, helmet, and a lock.  We advise everyone to practice bicycle safety, including obeying local traffic laws.  Helmets are strongly encouraged, but not required.

You may also want to bring money to spend on lunch, a snack, or a drink out in the neighborhood.  We’ll have food trucks at Loew Park, which will have a variety of items at a cost.

You might also want to bring a chair, since we cannot provide seating for everyone at Loew Park leading up to and during the raffle.

Speed Exterminating and Ameriflag are once again providing Pedal for Prizes water bottles while supplies are available.  We will do our best to keep water available.

Prepare for the weather!  Bring and wear sunblock.

Destinations: About half of the destinations participating in this year’s Pedal for Prizes are new to the event, while the other half have been featured in one or more of the previous three events. This year’s event will have twenty destinations.  You won’t know the destinations until you register at Loew Park.

We provide you a map and addresses of destinations at which you’ll have your card stamped.  Some participants have had success using GPS in the past.

Destinations will stop punching cards at 2:45pm.  Return to Loew Park by 3pm and exchange your punch card for raffle tickets.

Raffle: Slightly different from last year’s event is that we are anticipating having fewer prizes of greater value.  While we had close to eighty prizes the previous two years, we should have around fifty to help speed up the raffle.  This is in response to feedback we have received since the last Pedal for Prizes.  Check back later this week for a full list of prizes you can win.  We have been posting prizes on the Pedal for Prizes Facebook.

We will be raffling at minimum four bikes and at most eight.

Help us move the raffle along by returning punctually and dropping your tickets in the bins of the prizes you’d like to win.

Please remain patient during the raffle and help others be patient as well.  Your cooperation will help it go quickly and smoothly, which everyone would like.

- Registration: We’re opening registration a little earlier at 11:00 AM to give cyclists more time to explore the destinations and the Old Brooklyn neighborhood without feeling the need to rush.

- Destinations: Some of our favorite businesses and landmarks will return as destinations this year, as well as some new ones.

- Prizes: We’ll have more bicycles being raffled than ever before! Watch our blog and social media for updates about what kinds of bikes you can win. We’ll have more info on prizes in the near future.

- Pop UP Pearl: Pop UP Pearl will not be happening the same day and time as Old Brooklyn Pedal for Prizes.  It instead has been rescheduled for later in the summer.

THE RIDE

Register at Wexler’s Tavern and Eatery, 4555 State Road, and receive a list of a dozen or so trivia questions. You’ll need to ride your bike around the Old Brooklyn neighborhood on your own or with a group to answer them. Return to Wexler’s and have your answered scored. Getting all of them correct earns you a chance to win an excellent bike-related prize valued anywhere from $5 to $50.

Plus, for the first time ever, you’ll have the opportunity to win a Pedal for Prizes t-shirt!

THE RAFFLE

If we pick your ticket, you select a bike prize of your choice from a table. The earlier your ticket is picked, the better the choice of prizes. Check back for more information about some of the items we’re giving away. We’ll continue pulling tickets until we’re completely out of prizes.

Here are some helpful hints for you for the event:

* Pedal for Prizes is completely free and open to cyclists of all ages and skill levels.  It’s a family-friendly event!

* If you’re driving your bike to the event, Loew Park has a limited number of parking spaces.  However, there plenty of on-street places to park.  We just ask everyone to please be respectful to our Old Brooklyn neighbors.

* Registration begins at 12 noon.  At Loew Park, you’ll sign a release form and receive a map of twenty-two destinations and a punch card.  Cyclists are free to go on their way to as many destinations as they’d like in any order.

* Helmets are strongly encouraged, but not required.  We ask for everyone to obey traffic laws while participating in Pedal for Prizes.  Also, a lock will come in handy for when you

* We suggest bringing cash in case you’d like to get lunch at a local establishment or a cold drink someplace in Old Brooklyn.

* Pop UP Pearl will be happening at the same time as Pedal for Prizes, and as many as three destinations may be located throughout the street festival.  It will also be going on after Pedal, so there will still be plenty to see or do after Pedal’s raffle.

Here’s what we can tell you so far:

* Pedal will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2012 during Cleveland Bicycle Month.  Please mark your calendars!

* Old Brooklyn CDC’s second Pop UP Pearl is scheduled for the same day, so there will be a chance for you to enjoy entertainment, browse pop-up shops, and much more before, during, or after Pedal for Prizes.

* Due to the generosity of Neighborhood Connections, a program of the Cleveland Foundation that provides small grants to grassroots neighborhood groups to carry out projects, we’re planning to raffle four bikes, including one or two for kids.

Ok, we admit.  We think we’re pretty good at organizing cycling events.  But we’re not necessarily good about maintaining our blog.  Facebook, yes.  Blog and Twitter, not so much.

Coincidentally, we neglected to notify our blog readers about a major achievement for the Pedal team.

In November, Pedal for Prizes received one of three 2011 Excellence in Neighborhood Marketing Awards from LiveCLEVELAND!, a nonprofit organization that promotes living and leisure opportunities in Cleveland’s neighborhoods.  The awards are given to initiatives that are considered to showcase and celebrate communities in an exemplary way.

Old Brooklyn News was kind enough to include a blurb about the award, and well as Pedal’s John Young and Jeffrey Sugalski receiving it from LiveCLEVELAND! Executive Director Jeff Kipp at an awards luncheon.  Check out page 6.  The award in currently on display at Old Brooklyn CDC’s new offices for a short stint, then move to Speed Exterminating and Honey Hut.

We should note that our fellow award recipients were the Historic Warehouse District and Cleveland Asian Festival.  Both are awesome and very worthy, and we recommend you check them out sometime.

This is the second time that Pedal was acknowledged for its achievements.  We first were specifically named in a resolution of recognition from Cleveland City Council for Cleveland Bicycle Week in May 2011.
